What do the guidelines recommend?
Guidelines recommend that comprehensive training on clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) technique should be provided to neurourological patients.1-3 Whenever a patient presents with a UTI, IC technique and frequency must be reviewed.3
What is the impact of IC training?
A randomised controlled trial (RCT) evaluated the UTI frequency upon educational intervention. It showed:
- less bacteriuria
- fewer symptom reports
- fewer antibiotic treatment episodes
- lower UTI frequency4
Another multi-centre study showed that a good education programme (ep) can improve adherence to IC during the first year at home:
- 99% (ep) vs. 83%5
