Bladder and bowel issues are common and can affect around 4 in 5 people with multiple sclerosis (MS).  MS lesions block or delay signalling transmissions controlling bladder and bowel function.  Consequently, people with MS can experience issues with the bladder (overactive or urinary retention) and bowel (constipation or loss of bowel control).

Learning outcomes:

·       Define basic physiology behind urinary incontinence and micturition

·       Describe aspects of the MS pathology

·       Recognise symptoms of voiding problems in MS

·       Describe management options for bladder dysfunction in MS, specifically focussed on intermittent catheterisation

Note: this e-learning module provides general information only.  Clinicians should refer to their local guidelines or policies.
